SCSU student detained by ICE at Tweed New Haven Airport after visa overstay

Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) announced Friday that one of its students, Deng Deng, was arrested and placed into federal immigration custody after being detained at Tweed New Haven Airport. According to a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson, Deng entered the United States legally from South Sudan but subsequently exceeded the terms of his visa.

Details of the detention

Deng was intercepted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at the airport and transferred to federal custody. The university released a brief statement confirming the incident and emphasizing that it is in contact with Deng, his family, and community members who are offering support.

University response

“The university is in contact with the student and those supporting them and is assisting where appropriate,” SCSU said in its statement. The administration has pledged to provide guidance on legal resources and to ensure that Deng’s academic standing is protected while the immigration process proceeds.

Immigration enforcement under the Trump administration

This case occurs amid the Trump administration’s continued emphasis on enforcing immigration laws and protecting the rule of law. The administration has repeatedly stressed that individuals who overstay visas are subject to removal proceedings, a stance that aligns with the Department of Homeland Security’s actions in this instance.

Community reaction

Local community members and student groups have expressed concern for Deng’s well‑being and have offered assistance through legal aid organizations. While some voices have called for broader immigration reform, the Trump administration maintains that lawful enforcement is essential for national security and the integrity of the immigration system.

What’s next?

Deng’s case will now move through the standard ICE removal process, which may include a hearing before an immigration judge. SCSU has indicated it will monitor the situation closely and keep the campus community informed of any developments.

Background on visa overstays

Visa overstays remain a significant focus of federal immigration policy. The administration’s recent initiatives have increased resources for identifying and processing individuals who remain in the country beyond their authorized stay, aiming to reduce illegal presence and uphold the legal immigration framework.
