Bars in the Boston area are running out of beer due to the large number of Scottish soccer supporters in town for the FIFA World Cup. The fans, known as the “Tartan Army,” have been drinking heavily and have already forced several bars to schedule emergency beer deliveries.
Beer Deliveries Overwhelmed
According to Devon Savage, manager of communications for Boston Beer Co., the Samuel Adams downtown Boston taproom ran out of Samuel Adams Boston Lager over the weekend. Savage stated that the taproom sold more than 4,000 pints of Boston Lager, resulting in almost 90 empty kegs.
The Tartan Army’s drinking has not been limited to the Samuel Adams taproom. Other bars in the area, such as Hennessy’s Bar, have also reported running out of beer. Hennessy’s tripled its sales last weekend but still ran out of beer, according to NBC.
A refrigerator door at Federal Wine & Spirits even broke from being opened too many times, and the store’s Budweiser and Corona beer supplies were wiped out in one day.
Scottish Fans Bring Excitement to Boston
The Scottish fans have brought a lot of excitement to Boston, with many of them marching to Fenway Park after their team’s 1-0 win over Haiti last Saturday. The fans have been wearing kilts and playing bagpipes, and their presence has been felt throughout the city.
While some might view the fans’ heavy drinking as a problem, many others see it as a fun and festive atmosphere. As one Scottish fan told NBC, “You have a drinking kilt, for obvious reasons, because it might get some spillage on it. You have a dress kilt. So you always have two kilts.”
The city of Boston is preparing for the next match, with Scotland set to play Morocco on Friday. Bars may want to start treating beer deliveries like emergency preparedness drills to keep up with the demand.
