Scott Peterson’s Defense Claims New Evidence Could Reopen Murder Case

Scott Peterson’s legal team is making headlines once again as they claim to have uncovered new evidence that could potentially lead to a reevaluation of his murder conviction. This development comes as a documentary about the case is set to be released this summer. Peterson was convicted of the murder of his wife, Laci, and their unborn child in December 2002 in Modesto, California.

Defense Team’s Claims

Mark Geragos, Peterson’s longtime defense attorney, spoke at CrimeCon in Las Vegas, asserting that there is no concrete evidence linking Peterson to the crime. He highlighted a burned-out van found near the Petersons’ home after a burglary, which he believes could be connected to the case. Geragos alleges that prosecutors initially concealed this evidence.

The defense team, represented by the Los Angeles Innocence Project, plans to appeal a recent ruling by a San Mateo County Superior Court judge that denied their bid to overturn Peterson’s conviction. They have submitted a list of items they believe should be retested for DNA evidence, which was rejected by the court.

Potential New Evidence

Ninette Toosbuy, a retired Los Angeles Police Department detective working with Peterson’s defense, stated that multiple witnesses reported seeing Laci Peterson on the morning of December 24, 2002, but these accounts were not thoroughly investigated by the Modesto Police Department. Toosbuy argues that if these witnesses had been vetted, it could have eliminated Scott Peterson as a suspect early in the investigation.

The upcoming documentary, “Scott Peterson: The New Evidence,” will air on A&E on July 16 and 17, featuring witness testimonies and interviews with individuals closely involved in the case, including Geragos.
