Schumer says Democrats will win Michigan Senate seat, but candidate Abdul El‑Sayed refuses to back him

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D‑NY) told reporters that Democrats are on track to retake the U.S. Senate and that the key battleground is Michigan. Schumer highlighted the recent primary victory of Dr. Abdul El‑Sayed, a former Detroit health official, saying El‑Sayed has injected “new energy and new talent” into the party’s effort to win the Great Lakes state.

El‑Sayed declines to endorse Schumer

When asked whether he would campaign alongside Schumer, El‑Sayed responded that he would not back Schumer for Democratic leader if the New York senator is elected to that role. Instead, El‑Sayed said he would support Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D‑MD) for the position. The disagreement underscores a growing divide between the party establishment and progressive upstarts who have won primaries in states such as Florida, Wisconsin and Michigan.

Schumer’s focus on the Michigan race

Schumer emphasized his single mission: “Win the Senate.” He noted that the Democratic Party is a “big‑tent” organization and that, despite differing views on individual issues, the overall agenda—lowering costs for families and addressing what he called the “chaos” of the Trump administration—unites the party. He added that Michigan’s economy is closely tied to Canada, and that recent tariff threats from former President Donald Trump could give Democrats an advantage in the race.

Republican response

Republican Senate leaders remain confident that they can hold the Michigan seat. Former Rep. Mike Rogers, the GOP nominee who lost to Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D‑MI) in 2024, has been portraying El‑Sayed as a far‑left radical. Rogers argues that the internal Democratic fight will split the vote, allowing Republicans to expand their slim majority in the chamber.

What’s next for the campaign?

Schumer has not confirmed whether he will appear in Michigan before the November election, leaving the possibility of a joint appearance with El‑Sayed uncertain. Both candidates continue to focus on defeating former President Trump’s influence in the state, a theme reported by The New York Times after El‑Sayed’s primary win.

As the Senate map tightens and top forecasters shift three more races toward Democrats, the Michigan contest will be closely watched by both parties. Voters will hear more about the candidates’ positions on economic issues, trade with Canada, and the broader direction of the Democratic Party in the weeks ahead.
