A school shooter’s mother, Marcee Gray, helped her son, Colt Gray, reach his fans from prison, despite his conviction for killing four people at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. Prosecutors played recordings of jailhouse calls between Colt and Marcee, where they discussed his online reputation and mass killers.
Investigation and Charges
Barrow County District Attorney Brad Smith stated that they considered charging Marcee Gray but couldn’t tie her criminally to the killings. Colt’s father, Colin Gray, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for buying his son the semi-automatic rifle used in the shooting.
Marcee Gray acknowledged the allegations of abuse and neglect against her but claimed she was trying to keep the line of communication open with her son. The Department of Juvenile Justice eventually terminated her parental rights and placed Colt in foster care.
Professor John Acevedo from Emory University School of Law stated that even if prosecutors could connect a charge to Marcee Gray’s behavior, they wouldn’t be able to tie her to the shooting. The district attorney decided not to pursue charges against Marcee Gray, citing the difficulty of portraying Colt Gray as a victim in a trial.
