School Shooter’s Mother Avoids Charges

A school shooter’s mother, Marcee Gray, helped her son Colt Gray reach his fans from prison, but she will not face charges. Colt Gray received sentences totaling life without parole plus 20 years for the Apalachee High School shooting in Winder, Georgia.

Investigation and Charges

Barrow County District Attorney Brad Smith stated that they considered charges against Marcee Gray but couldn’t tie her criminally to the killings. Smith said that Marcee Gray did not have custody of Colt, was not in proximity to him, and did not provide him with the firearms used in the shooting.

Prosecutors played recordings of jailhouse calls between Colt and Marcee Gray, where they discussed mass killers and his online reputation. Marcee Gray also helped Colt obtain pictures and comments from his online fans, which raised concerns among victims’ family members.

Marcee Gray claimed she was trying to keep the line of communication open with her son and prevent him from shutting her out. She acknowledged that her tone and enunciation during the calls could be described as enthusiastic and encouraging, but stated that she was not aware of the nature of the online platforms her son was using.

Abuse and Neglect Allegations

Allegations of drug abuse and child neglect against Marcee Gray were already established before the shooting. Georgia’s Division of Family and Children Services found 12 categories of abuse and neglect of the Gray children, including inadequate food, shelter, and medical care.

Marcee Gray lost custody of her children due to these allegations and was ordered to stay out of Barrow County as a condition of her probation. She pleaded guilty to trespassing and damaging her ex-husband’s property less than a year before the school shooting.
