Saturday Morning at Lone Star Antique Mall Is Its Own Reward

By eight in the morning on a cool October Saturday, the parking lot off Corn Valley Road is already half full. Vendors are still setting up — a woman arranging jars of raw honey by size, a man in a battered Stetson unloading flat crates of dried peppers — and the light is that particular low-angle autumn gold that makes even a folding table look good. This is the Grand Prairie Farmers Market, held at the Farmers Branch location of City Hall — wait, no. This one runs out of the Epic Central area off Warrior Trail, and if you haven’t made it a Saturday habit yet, you’re missing something genuinely useful.

The market runs from roughly 8 a.m. to noon, late spring through early fall, with some winter dates scattered in depending on the season. It’s not huge — maybe twenty to thirty vendors on a busy day — but that’s part of what makes it work. You can actually talk to the people selling the food. The woman at the egg stand knows her chickens by temperament. The guy at the produce table grew up farming in East Texas and relocated to the DFW area a decade ago; he’ll tell you how he gets his tomatoes to taste like tomatoes again.

On a typical Saturday you’ll find fresh eggs, seasonal vegetables, local honey in several varieties, homemade jams and preserves, tamales (from a vendor who does a slow-roasted pork that’s worth showing up early for — they sell out), and usually a bread baker or two. The baked goods change week to week. A sourdough loaf showed up a few weeks ago and was gone by nine-thirty. There’s usually at least one vendor doing prepared food for immediate eating — breakfast tacos, kolaches, that kind of thing — so you can walk and graze while you shop.

Prices are fair without being showy about it. Eggs run about four to six dollars a dozen depending on the farm. Honey prices vary by size. The vegetables are priced close to grocery store rates but the quality difference is real, especially if you’re buying anything that doesn’t travel well — tomatoes, peaches in July, fresh herbs.

The crowd on a typical morning is a mix of longtime Grand Prairie residents who’ve been coming for years and newer arrivals from the apartment complexes and subdivisions that have been going up around Joe Pool Lake. There are dogs on leashes, strollers, couples splitting a breakfast taco over a paper napkin, kids asking about the vegetables they’ve never seen before. It has the relaxed feel of a place people actually use rather than visit as a novelty.

One practical note: get there before ten if you want the best selection. The popular vendors — the egg lady, the tamale guy, whoever has peaches that week — run out. By eleven the energy has shifted. Not dead, but quieter, and some tables are packing up. The sweet spot is roughly eight-thirty to nine-thirty, when the market is fully alive and the supply is still intact.

It’s free to attend. Bring cash, though a few vendors now take cards. And bring a bag — the reusable kind, obviously, but also practically speaking because you will buy more than you planned.
