Sarasota elementary students recall President Bush’s 9/11 classroom visit

On the morning of September 11, 2001, President George W. Bush stopped at Emma E. Booker Elementary School in Sarasota, Florida, to listen to second‑grade students read aloud. As the children practiced their skills, Chief of Staff Andrew Card whispered the news that a second plane had struck the World Trade Center, and the president’s expression shifted from admiration to concern.

Students’ memories of the moment

Krystal Davis, who was in Mrs. Sandra Daniels’ class, recalled a wave of confusion washing over the room. “You could see the shift on his face once he got the message,” she told ABC News. The president quickly returned to a reassuring smile, trying not to alarm the children.

Teacher Sandra Daniels said she “immediately knew something was wrong” when the president’s demeanor changed. The class was moved to another room, where a teacher attempted to explain the unfolding tragedy. Davis remembered the students watching the Twin Towers collapse on a small television in the front office.

What the president was doing

President Bush had come to the school to deliver a speech on his No Child Left Behind education initiative. Instead, after learning of the attacks, he addressed the nation, confirming reports of “an apparent terrorist attack on our country.” The planned education remarks were set aside for a solemn address.

Other students’ perspectives

Ten‑year‑old Stevenson Tose‑Rigell, son of the school’s principal, was waiting in the library for the president’s arrival. He described hours of waiting and the disappointment when the speech turned to a national emergency. “We were thinking, ‘Sounds like we’re under attack,’” he recalled.

After the president left, he boarded Air Force One and flew to military bases in Louisiana and Nebraska before returning to Washington, D.C., later that night.

25‑year remembrance

In May, Emma E. Booker Elementary marked the 25th anniversary of the attacks by receiving a steel beam from the World Trade Center, donated by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. The beam allows visitors to “put their hand on that steel and feel the loss and sacrifice” of that day.

Stephen Siller Jr., whose father was one of the 343 New York City firefighters killed on 9/11, said the beam’s presence helps “little kids understand that this is a sacred piece of history.”

Community reflections

Sarasota County Schools Superintendent Terry Connor issued a statement noting the district’s “uniquely personal connection” to the tragedy and honoring those who served.

Both Davis and Tose‑Rigell said the experience shaped their futures. Davis, now working in healthcare and aspiring to become a police officer, said the day inspired her to serve her community. Tose‑Rigell, whose mother, former principal Gwendolyn Tose‑Rigell, died in 2007, recalled feeling both sadness and pride when seeing archival footage of her on national television.

As the nation continues to grapple with the legacy of September 11, the former students of Emma E. Booker Elementary reflect on how a brief encounter with the president amid a national crisis left an indelible mark on their lives and on Sarasota’s sense of service.
