For the first weekend of November, Sarasota’s historic BMX track became the focal point of the international BMX racing circuit. The venue, the oldest continuously operating BMX facility in the United States, hosted the final two rounds of the UCI BMX Racing World Cup, the only U.S. stop on the ten‑round tour.
Olympic points on the line
More than 200 elite cyclists from around the world converged on the Sarasota venue, each hoping to earn valuable points toward qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The World Cup series concludes this Saturday and Sunday, and the points riders collect here will be critical in shaping the Olympic field.
Local riders seize the moment
Home‑grown talent also took center stage. Myakka‑based rider Jeremy Smith and Sarasota resident Tyler Henry, who moved to the area to train closer to the track, both highlighted the significance of competing alongside world‑class athletes.
“I started racing when I was 5. This has kind of been the dream, just being able to race around guys that aren’t from here and be on the highest level. That’s what this is,” Henry said. “It’s a blessing honestly. It’s a dream come true from a 5‑year‑old little kid.”
Smith added that the influx of international competitors benefits the local cycling scene and the broader community. “I think it’s great. I think a lot of the other riders from the other country are going to fall in love with Florida. I’ve seen it already from them on social media. Going to the beaches and the palm trees and such,” he said. “I think it’s also great for the local riders and local families to see such a great professional event. I think it’s great for Sarasota and all of us American riders.”
Spectators invited
The weekend schedule offers fans the chance to watch the heats in person on both Saturday and Sunday. With the World Cup finale concluding the tour’s sole U.S. stop, the event promises high‑octane competition and a festive atmosphere for spectators.
Looking ahead
As the series wraps up, riders will turn their focus to the Olympic qualification process, aiming to secure spots for the 2028 Games. For Sarasota, the successful hosting of the finale underscores the city’s growing reputation as a hub for elite BMX racing and a supportive environment for aspiring athletes.
