Nathan Martinez, 20, of Santa Maria died after being rescued from the waters of Lopez Lake on Tuesday, June 30. According to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to Lopez Lake around 4:15 p.m. after receiving a report about a swimmer in distress.
Witnesses stated that Martinez had been swimming with friends when he appeared to be in distress and sank beneath the surface. A nearby boat was flagged down, and the occupants were able to locate Martinez and bring him onto their boat, where CPR was immediately administered.
Martinez was then transported to Arroyo Grande Community Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
