San Luis Obispo Starbucks Baristas Vote to Join Union, Adding to Statewide Trend

Baristas at the Starbucks on Madonna Road in San Luis Obispo voted seven to two to join a union and begin collective bargaining for a labor contract. The vote makes this store the 66th Starbucks location in California to unionize and adds to more than 700 unionized stores nationwide represented by Starbucks Workers United, an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

Local workers cite staffing and onboarding concerns

“Partners at our store have worked countless days without proper staffing, have received extremely poor onboarding, and heard many broken promises about a change for the better coming soon,” said Jacob Weisgerber, a shift supervisor at the Madonna Road store for three years. “It became quite clear to many of the baristas at our store that this situation would not change organically, and that we would have to seize this moment ourselves.”

Union campaign gains momentum

According to Starbucks Workers United, 82 percent of union elections at Starbucks locations have resulted in a vote for collective bargaining since the nationwide campaign began in late 2021. Last year alone, more than 2,000 workers at locations in 45 states and Washington, D.C. joined the labor organization, which has secured over 30 tentative agreements with Starbucks.

Weisgerber added, “Our decision to go through with this process was due to a near certainty that Starbucks will always choose profits over partners. We believe that everyone in the workplace deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion. In joining the union, we join thousands of other voices that refuse to accept these conditions as the new norm.”

Union demands focus on pay, hours and workplace fairness

The union’s proposed contract priorities include better scheduling, higher take‑home pay, and a resolution of hundreds of alleged unfair labor practice complaints filed at the federal level.

Starbucks response

Starbucks issued a statement saying the company has continued to bargain in good faith, offering competitive pay and industry‑leading benefits that average more than $30 an hour for eligible hourly partners. The company highlighted performance‑based bonuses of up to $1,200, expanded tipping options and weekly pay as part of its existing benefits package, noting that these updates apply to non‑union stores and, as required by law, are subject to bargaining at the roughly five percent of U.S. stores represented by a union.

Starbucks also referenced an unfair‑labor‑practice strike that took place nationwide in November of the previous year, describing it as the longest work stoppage in the company’s history.

Implications for the local community

The unionization of the San Luis Obispo store reflects a broader shift in the local labor market, where workers are increasingly seeking a voice in negotiations over wages, scheduling and workplace conditions. For the community, the outcome of collective bargaining could influence the quality of service, employee turnover and the overall economic health of the downtown area.

Local business owners and residents are watching the development closely, recognizing that a successful contract could set a precedent for other service‑industry employers in the region.
