San Dimas parents give birth on highway, LAFD assists newborn arrival

At approximately 12:12 a.m. on Thursday, a vehicle stopped at the intersection of Via Verde Drive and the 57 Freeway in San Dimas, California, after the driver’s wife went into labor. The father, unable to reach a nearby hospital in time, called emergency services for assistance.

Firefighters and police respond

Los Angeles County Fire Department (LAFD) personnel were dispatched to the scene following the call. A California Highway Patrol spokesperson confirmed that the father requested help when his wife entered active labor while they were still in the car.

When LAFD arrived, paramedics found the mother alert and able to communicate with the responders. Emergency crews quickly set up a safe area on the roadside, placed the newborn on a stretcher, and loaded both mother and child into an ambulance for transport to the nearest medical facility.

Safe delivery and community gratitude

Video captured at the scene shows firefighters and paramedics working together to stabilize the mother and infant. The baby was swaddled and placed in a secure carrier before being placed on the ambulance stretcher. The mother remained conscious throughout the process and was able to speak with the medical team.

Local residents who witnessed the event praised the rapid response of the fire department and highway patrol. “They were there in minutes and handled everything with such professionalism,” one onlooker said.

Importance of emergency preparedness

This incident underscores the critical role that first‑responders play in protecting families during unexpected medical emergencies. The LAFD’s swift action ensured that both mother and child received the care they needed without delay.

Officials remind drivers that if a medical emergency arises while on the road, calling 911 immediately can save lives. The LAFD continues to train its personnel for a wide range of scenarios, including childbirth, to maintain readiness for any situation that may arise on California’s highways.

Next steps for the family

The newborn and mother were taken to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. Hospital staff reported that both are in good condition and that the baby’s health is stable. The family expressed gratitude for the quick assistance they received from the fire department and law‑enforcement officers.

San Dimas officials plan to review the incident to ensure that emergency response protocols remain effective and to explore ways to improve public awareness about seeking medical help promptly.
