San Diego Habitat’s Third Playhouse Competition Donates 14 Playhouses, Raises $100K

San Diego Habitat for Humanity held its third annual Playhouse Competition, turning a friendly contest into a community-driven fundraiser and service project. Dozens of participants gathered to design, build and finish small play structures, combining creative energy with a mission to support local families in need of affordable housing.

Teams made up of corporate employees, neighborhood volunteers and community groups worked side by side throughout the event. The atmosphere mixed teamwork and friendly rivalry as participants sketched designs, painted details and assembled the playhouses from the ground up. Organizers emphasized collaboration, giving groups with varied skills a chance to contribute.

At the close of the competition, 14 completed playhouses were delivered to recipients across the region. The small structures went to local families, early childhood centers and military households, providing children with safe, imaginative spaces while also symbolizing the larger goal of stable housing for parents and caregivers.

Beyond the toy-sized homes, the event succeeded as a fundraiser—bringing in more than $100,000 to benefit Habitat’s affordable homeownership programs. Those dollars will help support the nonprofit’s ongoing work to expand access to stable, affordable housing in the community through training, volunteer construction and homebuyer assistance.

Organizers and volunteers praised the turnout and results, noting the dual impact of creating joyful play spaces for children while directing substantial resources toward long-term housing solutions. Community members interested in future events or volunteering were encouraged to connect with local Habitat efforts to learn how they can help build on this momentum.
