Election night in San Diego brought mixed emotions as Republicans celebrated significant advances in local races. At the US Grant Hotel, Republican supporters gathered to enjoy the evening as results favored their candidates. Chula Vista’s Republican mayor held a substantial lead over his Democratic opponent, and several Republican candidates emerged from crowded primary fields.
Measure A Faces Rejection
Measure A, which proposed a tax on vacant second homes, was met with resistance from voters. With 58% voting ‘No,’ the measure appears to be the second citywide tax increase rejected in recent years. Opponents, including San Diego County Assessor-Recorder-Clerk Jordan Marks, argued that such taxes wouldn’t solve the city’s housing issues, labeling them as ‘bad taxes.’
Key Races and Runoffs
In the 48th Congressional District, Republican County Supervisor Jim Desmond led the race, with Marni von Wilpert advancing to face him in November. This race is expected to draw national attention due to its competitiveness following redistricting.
In the San Diego City Council District 2 race, former Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey and Deputy City Attorney Nicole Crosby will advance to the November election. Voters in District 2 prioritized affordability, with differing views on how to achieve it.
In District 4, challenger Martha Abraham led incumbent Henry Foster, capitalizing on voter dissatisfaction with City Hall’s handling of past issues. Meanwhile, in District 6, incumbent Kent Lee and former County Board of Education member Mark Powell will proceed to the runoff.
San Ysidro School Board Member Antonio Martinez and Gerardo Ramirez lead the race in District 8, with Venus Molina trailing closely behind. Ramirez’s supporters celebrated his second-place position, viewing it as a positive sign.
Republican factions also saw a proxy battle, with Assemblymember Carl DeMaio’s team securing victories in races to replace County Supervisor Jim Desmond and State Sen. Brian Jones. San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones and former San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott advanced in their respective races.
