More students throughout South Central Texas are set to begin the 2026-2027 school year on Tuesday, and drivers are urged to watch for kids and school zones.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, traffic crashes in school zones increased 12% from 2024 to 2025. As kids in the San Antonio area head back to school throughout August, TxDOT is reminding drivers to slow down and stay alert around schools to help prevent crashes and save lives.
Tips for driving in school zones, sharing the road with school buses, and children walking or biking to school are available to help ensure a safe return to school.
