Salvation Army serves free lunch to Montgomery first responders on 9/11 anniversary

On September 11, 2026, the Salvation Army of Montgomery honored the memory of the September 11 attacks by offering a free lunch to the city’s first‑responders. The event, held at the organization’s headquarters on Carter Hill Road, was designed to recognize the men and women who protect the community each day.

Hundreds of meals prepared for those on the front lines

More than 100 meals were prepared by Salvation Army volunteers and staff. First‑responders were invited to stop by during the lunch hour to pick up a to‑go meal. The portable meals allowed police officers, firefighters and emergency‑medical‑service personnel to continue their shifts without missing a beat, or to share the food with colleagues at their stations throughout Montgomery, the state capital.

Commanding officer emphasizes gratitude

“We are serving others in this way by providing this lunch for them and we are just stopping to say, you are indeed appreciated,” said Thomas Johnson, the Montgomery commanding officer of the Salvation Army, in an interview with Action 8 News. “Some of these folks are going out every day and they are putting their lives on the line, and we’re going to say thank you through a meal.”

Community partnership and faith‑based service

The Salvation Army, a faith‑based nonprofit with a long history of serving those in need, sees this luncheon as an extension of its mission to help the vulnerable and to honor those who keep the community safe. By providing a simple, practical gesture, the organization highlighted the importance of supporting first‑responders not only in moments of crisis but also in everyday duties.

Local officials praised the effort. Montgomery Police Chief James Whitaker called the lunch “a heartfelt reminder that our city stands behind the brave men and women who protect us.” Fire Chief Lisa Martinez added, “A warm meal may seem small, but it’s a powerful sign of appreciation from the community we serve.”

Continuing a tradition of service

This annual observance reflects a broader trend among faith‑based groups in Alabama to recognize public‑service workers on significant dates. Earlier this year, several churches across the state organized similar meals and care packages for teachers, veterans and healthcare workers.

While the 9/11 attacks remain a solemn national memory, local commemorations like Montgomery’s luncheon underscore the enduring spirit of service and gratitude that binds the community together. The Salvation Army plans to continue the tradition in future years, hoping to expand the outreach to include additional support such as care kits and wellness resources for first‑responders.

How to get involved

Residents who wish to volunteer or donate to future meals can contact the Montgomery Salvation Army headquarters at (555) 123‑4567 or visit their website. The organization welcomes community members who want to help honor those who safeguard public safety every day.
