A Marion County grand jury has found that a Salem police officer was justified in shooting a man who held a woman hostage at gunpoint in a homeless camp. Sgt. Jason Donner shot Jose L. Anguiano, 35, on June 11 after Anguiano pointed what appeared to be a handgun at him.
Hostage Situation Unfolds
Donner and other officers responded to a hangup call to 911 and a report of a woman being held hostage at gunpoint in a tent near Northeast Portland Road. As they approached the area, they heard a woman crying and a man’s angry voice. Donner and another officer, Chad Galusha, drew their guns and approached the tent, where Anguiano appeared from behind a bush holding what looked like a handgun.
Donner shot Anguiano three times, and the woman who had been held hostage was able to escape safely. Anguiano was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and was later released from the hospital and taken into custody.
The grand jury also indicted Anguiano on charges of coercion, assault, and menacing, and he is scheduled to appear in court on June 29.
