Salem Historic Landmarks Commission Schedules Public Hearing on Englewood Park Designation

The City of Salem’s Historic Landmarks Commission announced a public hearing to evaluate Englewood Park for designation as a local historic resource. The hearing is set for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026, and will take place in the Community Room of the Salem Police Department at 333 Division St NE.

How the Designation Process Works

Under Salem’s historic preservation ordinance (SRC 230.010), the commission reviews proposals that meet specific criteria for historic significance, architectural integrity, and community value. If Englewood Park meets these standards, it could receive formal recognition, which helps protect the site and may make it eligible for preservation grants.

Public Participation

Anyone who wishes to support or oppose the designation may speak at the hearing, either in person or through a representative. Written comments should be submitted to the case manager before the hearing. The staff recommends emailing comments to ensure they are received on time. Online submissions are also accepted via the city’s planning comments portal at https://egov.cityofsalem.net/PlanningComments.

Only individuals who submit written testimony or appear at the hearing will have the right to appeal the commission’s decision. All comments become part of the public record, including any personal information such as name, email, address, and phone number.

Access and Accommodations

The city will provide accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act for anyone who requests them at least 48 hours in advance. For assistance in Spanish, callers can reach the city at 503‑588‑6173.

Additional Resources

A staff report detailing the proposal will be posted online no later than 5:00 p.m. on September 9, 2026, at the commission’s webpage: https://www.cityofsalem.net/government/boards-commissions/historic-landmarks-commission. The hearing will also be streamed live on YouTube; the link can be accessed through the city’s public‑meeting portal.

For further information, contact Jake Morris at 503‑540‑2417 or via email at [email protected]. Notices will be published in the Salem Reporter on September 2 and September 9.
