Salave’a’s Polynesian Home Cooking Fuels Wildcats’ Defensive Line Bonding

Arizona’s defensive line has been building more than technique this spring — they’re strengthening a culture around food, fellowship and accountability. Coach Joe Salave’a regularly opens his home to the group for homemade Polynesian meals, with dishes such as lu pulu (corned beef or lamb cooked in coconut milk and wrapped in taro leaves) and ‘otai, a fruit-and-coconut-milk beverage. Those meals have become a favorite break from the routine, giving players time to connect about life, school and things beyond football.

That off-field chemistry mirrors continuity on the roster. The Wildcats return nine defensive linemen from last season’s 9-4 squad that played in the Holiday Bowl, and several contributors have significant experience. Together, Tre Smith, Leroy Palu, Mays Pese, Dominic Lolesio and Julian Savaiinaea account for a large chunk of the unit’s career defensive snaps, and that familiarity has shown up in clearer communication and more cohesive play during spring work.

Leading the room is sixth-year senior Tre Smith, nicknamed “Mr. Redline” for his full-speed approach to practices, meetings and game days. At 6-5 and roughly 262 pounds, he brings a physical edge suited to the conference, plus steady leadership. Coaches say Smith has been especially receptive to coaching on technique, mobility and situational awareness — a combination that’s improving his on-field recognition and movement.

Several others are trending upward as well. Mays Pese (6-3, 284) has the size and versatility to play inside or on the edge and earned All-Freshman honorable mention last year; Julian Savaiinaea (6-3, 282) is viewed as a stabilizer for the front; Leroy Palu has trimmed and strengthened his frame since transferring in; and Dominic Lolesio (6-4, 253) is regarded as the unit’s most-improved player and ready for starter-level snaps. New additions include junior college transfers Ezra Funa and Zac Siulepa — the latter, a 6-6 Australian who has dropped significant weight to improve conditioning and is being eased into the rotation.

Beyond scheme and personnel, coaches emphasize that the group’s bond is player-driven. Teammates hold each other accountable on nutrition and training, roommates help one another with daily habits, and gatherings at Salave’a’s home reinforce a sense of brotherhood. That internal chemistry, combined with experienced returners and intriguing newcomers — including freshmen and recent transfers — gives the defensive line a spirited identity heading into the season.
