Safe Cars for Teen Drivers

When it comes to buying a car for a teenager, parents often prioritize safety. The crash rate for teenagers is almost four times that of drivers ages 20 and older, making it crucial to choose a vehicle with robust safety features. Consumer Reports and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety have teamed up to identify the safest used cars for teen drivers at different prices.

Safety Features Matter

According to the report, a combination of inexperience, immaturity, social pressures, and potential distractions contribute to the high crash rate among teenagers. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for individuals between the ages of 15 and 24. Therefore, parents should opt for a car with as much safety as their budget allows. A teen driver’s first vehicle should not be too small, too big, or too fast.

Consumer Reports and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety analyzed various makes and models to find safe and budget-friendly car options. They identified 74 used cars under $20,000 that have performance and features designed to keep young drivers out of a crash, while also providing high levels of crash protection in the event of an accident. Some popular picks include the Honda Civic, Toyota Camry, and Hyundai Tucson.

Features like automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and blind spot warning can provide an extra layer of protection for inexperienced drivers. Additionally, good driving habits are essential for safe driving. Parents should also consider the cost of adding a teen driver to their insurance policy, which can increase their insurance bill. However, it is often cheaper to keep them on the family policy rather than purchasing a separate one.
