Saddle Up and Soak It In: Why Saddleback Golf Club Is Bend’s Most Underrated Afternoon

There are golf courses, and then there are golf courses that make you pull over on the drive home just to stare back at what you just played. Tetherow Golf Club, perched on the high desert benchlands on the northwest edge of Bend, is firmly in the second category — and if you haven’t played it yet, you’re leaving one of Central Oregon’s finest experiences on the table.

Designed by the acclaimed David McLay Kidd — the same architect behind Bandon Dunes’ original course — Tetherow opened in 2008 and has been quietly earning a reputation as one of the Pacific Northwest’s most distinctive golf destinations ever since. It sits at about 3,600 feet elevation, tucked into the juniper and sage just minutes from downtown Bend off NW Century Drive, and the moment you step onto the first tee box you understand that this place operates at a different frequency.

The course is laid out in a Scottish links style, which is rare in inland Oregon and refreshing in the best possible way. Fairways ripple and tumble across natural lava rock outcroppings, native fescue grasses frame every shot, and the wind — almost always present up on that plateau — becomes as much a factor as your swing. It rewards thoughtful, strategic play over raw power, which makes it endlessly interesting whether you’re a weekend player or someone who takes their handicap very seriously.

What I love most about Tetherow is how it refuses to feel manufactured. So many resort courses iron every wrinkle out of the landscape in pursuit of manicured perfection. Tetherow leans into its terrain. Blind shots over ridgelines, wide fairways that still somehow manage to be deceptively tricky, and greens that are fast, undulating, and almost comically fun — it all adds up to an 18-hole round that you’ll be replaying in your head for days.

The clubhouse is worth the visit on its own. The Tetherow Lodge offers stunning views of the Cascade Mountains — Three Sisters, Broken Top, and Mount Bachelor all lined up on the horizon — and the on-site restaurant serves honest, well-executed food that hits the spot after a full round. Grab a seat on the terrace, order a local Oregon IPA, and watch the late afternoon light go golden across the fairways. You’ve earned it.

Tee times can be booked directly through the Tetherow website and are available to non-members, making this entirely accessible for visiting golfers. Summer mornings fill up fast, so book at least a week ahead if you’re visiting during peak season between June and September. Twilight rates are available and offer outstanding value if you want to experience the course in that magical late-day desert light.

Even if golf isn’t typically your thing, Tetherow is worth understanding as a place — a spot where landscape and sport come together in a way that feels genuinely Oregonian. Big sky, volcanic rock, mountain views, and a healthy respect for the wind. There’s nowhere else quite like it in Bend, and honestly, very few places like it anywhere.
