Sabrina Carpenter, a prominent pop artist, has been granted a temporary restraining order against William Applegate, a 31-year-old man accused of stalking her. The order, issued by a Los Angeles County judge, prohibits Applegate from coming within 100 yards of Carpenter, her sister Sarah Carpenter, and Sarah’s partner, all of whom reside at Carpenter’s Hollywood Hills home.
Allegations of Escalating Behavior
Carpenter filed for the restraining order in Los Angeles County Superior Court, citing a pattern of escalating behavior by Applegate. According to court documents, Applegate began appearing at Carpenter’s home around April 20, claiming to know her personally and insisting she was expecting him. The situation intensified on May 23 when Applegate allegedly attempted to force open Carpenter’s front door after entering a neighboring property. Carpenter described this incident as one of the most disturbing violations of her personal safety and privacy.
In her declaration to the court, Carpenter expressed severe and ongoing emotional distress due to Applegate’s actions. She stated that his pattern of stalking, trespassing, and surveillance has caused her significant fear. Supporting Carpenter’s request, a Los Angeles police detective submitted a declaration noting that Applegate allegedly struck a security guard who confronted him outside the home.
Legal Proceedings and Future Court Appearance
Images from a Ring security camera reportedly show Applegate at Carpenter’s front door, being approached by a security guard. Despite police intervention, Applegate allegedly returned less than 24 hours later and remained outside Carpenter’s residence for several hours, returning again the following day to park outside the property.
While it is unclear if Applegate will face criminal charges, the police department has submitted a criminal case for trespassing and other charges to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office. Applegate is expected to appear in court on June 18 regarding this case.
Carpenter, 27, has gained significant success as a pop artist, performing major hits at venues like Coachella. The legal measures taken reflect her efforts to ensure personal safety and privacy amidst her rising career.
