Ryan Fox, the Champion Golfer of the Year, recently found out that traveling with one of the most iconic trophies in sports isn’t easy. After winning The Open at Royal Birkdale, Fox had to deal with the challenges of bringing the Claret Jug on a commercial airplane.
Negotiating with the Gate Agent
According to Fox, he had to negotiate with the gate agent to bring the Claret Jug on the plane as a carry-on. He recalled telling the agent, ‘I’ve got some special cargo here, is there any chance I can just take these on the plane?’ The agent asked what was in the boxes, and Fox replied, ‘The Claret Jug, it’s the oldest trophy in golf.’ The agent then asked if he had won it, and Fox confirmed, ‘Uh, yeah. Can I just take it through?’ The agent agreed, saying, ‘Yep, no problem.’ Fox believes that being recognized by other travelers as he made his way through security may have helped his cause.
Fox was seated behind Cameron Young, who finished runner-up at Birkdale, on the flight from Manchester to London. He eventually made his way back home from Heathrow Airport.
