Rutgers professor Mark Bray announces book claiming U.S. has entered a “fascist present”

Rutgers University professor Mark Bray, known for his book Antifa: The Anti‑Fascist Handbook, is preparing to release a new title that depicts the United States as living under a “fascist present.” The book, Unpunctuated Death Threats: Notes from a Fascist Present, is scheduled for publication on Jan. 19.

Why Bray left the United States

According to the publisher, Bray and his family left for Spain after the Sept. 10, 2025 assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Bray says he was doxxed, received multiple death threats, and had his home address circulated online. Federal agents reportedly stopped and questioned him at the airport before he and his wife and two young children departed for Spain.

Book description and themes

The publisher’s description frames the work as an “intimate journey” into what it calls a “Trumpian moment” and a resurgence of fascism. It alleges that far‑right influencers, social‑media soldiers, and networked violence have created an environment that forced Bray into exile. The description also notes that Bray turns to his Jewish identity for answers amid the “genocide raging in Gaza.”

Background on Bray’s activism

Bray has previously advocated for “antifascism” and “militant anti‑fascism” in online posts. His earlier works include The Anarchist Inquisition and Translating Anarchy, which examine anarchist and Antifa movements. In an Oct. 4, 2025 post on the social platform Bluesky, Bray wrote that the law sometimes protects President Trump, but that it could become a weapon if Trump changes it in his favor.

Campus response

Last October, members of Rutgers’ Turning Point USA chapter launched a petition calling for Bray’s removal, citing concerns over his past statements. A sophomore student, Megan Doyle, told Fox News Digital that Bray’s portrayal of himself as a victim is “highly ironic” and questioned his donations to the International Antifa legal defense fund.

No comment from Bray or Rutgers

Fox News Digital reached out to both Bray and Rutgers University for comment, but no response was received at the time of publication.

Context

The story reflects ongoing tensions on college campuses between conservative student groups and faculty members who support or defend Antifa and related movements. It also underscores the broader national debate over free speech, academic freedom, and the safety of scholars who take controversial positions.
