Russia launches massive missile and drone strikes on nine Ukrainian cities

In a coordinated overnight assault, Russian forces fired missiles and jet‑powered drones at nine Ukrainian cities, extending the barrage into Thursday morning. Explosions were reported across Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Poltava, Odesa and other regional centers.

Civilian casualties and infrastructure damage

The strikes hit both military‑related targets—industrial plants, oil refineries, logistics hubs and port facilities—and civilian areas, including apartment blocks. A 78‑year‑old woman was killed in the southern Zaporizhzhia region and another person died in the northern Kharkiv region. At least 14 others were reported wounded.

Four districts of Kyiv suffered damage to residential buildings, a school and a medical facility, though no casualties were confirmed there. In Odesa, a 16‑story residential tower, two schools and a grain elevator were hit, disrupting a key export hub for Ukrainian grain.

Ukrainian response and defense challenges

Ukraine’s air force said it shot down or suppressed seven Russian ballistic missiles, but did not disclose the methods used. The Ukrainian military also reported that its defenses intercepted 267 Ukrainian drones over 14 Russian regions, Crimea, the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russia’s continued investment in missiles and expanded warfare underscores the need for additional ballistic missile defense packages, urging European allies to secure more U.S.‑made Patriot systems and other air‑defense aid.

Impact on transportation and commerce

State rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia said train services were delayed by more than 17 hours in the wake of the attacks. The Odesa region, a vital conduit for grain exports, saw its logistics facilities damaged, raising concerns about the flow of agricultural products to global markets.

Broader regional tensions

Russia’s neighbors remain uneasy about the conflict’s potential to spread. Moldova reported five drones breaching its airspace overnight, though it did not identify the source. The incident highlights ongoing security concerns for Eastern European states bordering the war zone.

Ukrainian retaliation

Ukraine continues to launch long‑range drones almost nightly at targets inside Russia. Recent strikes hit command posts near Donetsk and damaged logistics facilities belonging to Russian e‑commerce firms Ozon and Wildberries, signaling a reciprocal escalation.

As the fighting persists, both sides claim to be inflicting mutual destruction, while civilian populations bear the brunt of the violence.
