Russia’s Kremlin stated that there can be no security guarantees for Ukraine without Russia’s involvement. This statement was made in response to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s comment that Moscow should not play a part in shaping such arrangements.
Ukraine’s Security Concerns
Ukraine has been seeking guarantees from the West to protect it against future attacks by Moscow, whose forces currently control around a fifth of its territory. The Kremlin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, described Merz’s comment as illustrating the ‘dead-end position’ taken by European governments over the conflict.
Peskov also commented on the EU’s imposition of sanctions against the Russian tech firm VK, saying it was ‘utterly absurd.’ The EU sanctions were imposed due to VK’s development of the MAX messaging app, which critics accuse the Russian authorities of using as a surveillance tool.
