Rudy Martinez Has Been Slinging Agua Fresca Since Before You Were Born

On a Tuesday in February, when the marine layer hasn’t burned off and Cesar Chavez Avenue is doing its usual low-volume hum, the juice counter at La Tapatía is already moving. Not packed, not frantic — just steady. A woman in scrubs orders a large horchata and two tamarind waters without looking at the menu. She’s done this before. Everyone here has done this before.

La Tapatía sits on a stretch of East L.A. that doesn’t get much attention from people who don’t already live there, which suits the regulars just fine. It’s a produce market first — bins of chayotes, stacks of nopales, tomatillos in their papery husks, bags of dried chiles — and a juicería second, though that distinction feels arbitrary once you’ve watched Rudy work the citrus press for five minutes straight. The man doesn’t waste motion.

The agua fresca lineup rotates with the season and with whatever came in that morning. Jamaica is always there, dark and tart and barely sweet the way it should be. In winter, you’ll find tejocote water if you’re lucky, and a tamarind-hibiscus blend that makes you understand why people drive across town for this stuff. Summer brings watermelon, cucumber-lime, and a cantaloupe version so good it almost forgives the parking situation on that block. Almost.

A large cup runs you around two-fifty, maybe three dollars depending on what’s in it. The freshly squeezed orange juice — which Rudy will make while you wait, from oranges he will select personally, without theatrics — is closer to four. It is worth four dollars. It is worth considerably more than four dollars, but this is East L.A. and nobody’s going to gouge you for juice.

The market side is worth a slow walk even if you’re not cooking. Prices are honest, the herbs are fresh enough that you can smell the cilantro before you’re within arm’s reach of it, and the dried goods section has things you won’t find at a chain grocery unless you drive to a much larger city. The staff will tell you what to do with an unfamiliar ingredient if you ask, and sometimes if you don’t.

Rainy weekday mornings are the move. The weekend draws a crowd that, while entirely pleasant, makes the narrow aisles feel like a slow-motion obstacle course. On a gray Tuesday, you get the full experience at your own pace: fresh produce, a cup of something cold and sharp and real, and the particular satisfaction of a neighborhood business that has absolutely no interest in being discovered. It’s been discovered. By the people who matter to it. That’s enough.

Bring cash. Park on a side street. Don’t skip the agua de jamaica, even if you think you’ve had it before. You probably haven’t had it like this.
