A microburst with winds up to 70 miles per hour caused damage in a Royse City neighborhood and the Stone River Golf Course on Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
Residents described cloudy skies, followed by a sudden, intense downpour of rain and whipping winds. "I heard a lot of lightning and thunder – and then the wind came," said resident Howard Terry.
Damage Assessment
The winds split the course’s equipment barn in half, ripping apart the roof and sending sheets of metal onto neighboring homes. Flying lumber pierced a window and lodged into the green, but spared golfers. "It was amazing that nobody was hurt – we’re thankful there," said Terry.
Groundskeepers worked to clear debris from around one hole, while golfers played through. The crew told NBC5 the damage was contained to a small area and the course remained open.
Microbursts have caused significant and deadly damage in North Texas. In 2019, microburst winds toppled a crane, slicing through a Dallas apartment building and killing one woman.
