Royals unveil design for downtown Kansas City ballpark, $1.9 B project

Royals President of Real Estate and Development Brooks Sherman and Populous senior principal Earl Santee revealed detailed renderings of the franchise’s upcoming downtown Kansas City ballpark on Thursday. The design calls for four tiers of seating, roughly 34,000 permanent seats and about 3,000 standing‑room‑only spots, creating a more intimate experience that brings fans closer to the action.

Design highlights rooted in Kansas City’s character

The stadium’s West Plaza entrance, intended for streetcar riders and south‑side parkers, draws inspiration from local architecture with a limestone base topped by terracotta and metal cladding. The home‑plate entrance will rise from the upper deck, and views from behind home plate will showcase downtown skyscrapers, reinforcing the ballpark’s connection to the city.

Santee explained that his goal was to make the venue feel as if it had always belonged in Kansas City, complementing existing landmarks such as Crown Center, Union Station, the Crossroads Arts District and the Liberty Memorial. He added that the project will enhance these assets and help the surrounding neighborhoods feel integrated with the new development.

Fan‑focused amenities and expanded facilities

According to Sherman, the new ballpark will feature more club and premium spaces, improved circulation, and a greater emphasis on fan proximity to the field. Player‑development facilities will also be expanded, supporting the team’s long‑term competitive goals.

Fans asked for familiar touches from Kauffman Stadium, and Royals CEO and Chairman John Sherman confirmed that “CrownVision” and signature fountains will return in a larger, upgraded form.

Financing and public‑private partnership

The total cost of the stadium, headquarters and related infrastructure is projected at about $1.9 billion. Kansas City has agreed to contribute $600 million, and the Royals are seeking more than $500 million from the state of Missouri as part of a public‑private partnership.

Beyond the ballpark, the organization plans to invest an additional $1 billion in improvements to Crown Center, the Westin, the Sheraton and an entertainment district surrounding the stadium. The mixed‑use development will also include housing and retail components.

Community response and logistics

Local residents and business owners expressed cautious optimism. Cardinals fan Dave Thein, who works near the proposed site, said he supports the renderings but wonders about parking. Sherman and Santee reassured that existing parking capacity is sufficient and that many fans are expected to walk, bike or ride the streetcar to the venue.

The city will preserve Washington Square Park as green space, maintaining the neighborhood’s open‑area feel. The Royals are targeting a groundbreaking in June 2027, with the aim of opening the stadium for the 2030 season.

Next steps

The project still requires final approvals from city council and state officials, as well as the completion of financing agreements. A news conference held Thursday provided the first public look at the renderings, and a video of the event is available on the Royals’ website.
