Roy Cooper launches “Make Stuff Cost Less” Senate tour in Charlotte

Charlotte residents got a front‑row seat to the next chapter of North Carolina politics on Friday when former Governor Roy Cooper took his “Make Stuff Cost Less” campaign to the city. Speaking from a downtown venue, Cooper framed his Senate bid around three core promises: eliminating costly tariffs, bringing affordable health care back to families, and lowering everyday prices for goods and services.

Cooper’s cost‑of‑living focus

“Number one, we need to roll back these tariffs,” Cooper told a crowd of supporters and local business owners. “We need to restore health care to people.” He argued that recent federal trade policies have driven up prices on everything from groceries to gasoline, and that a Senate seat would give him the platform to push for relief.

Cooper also highlighted his record as governor, noting that under his administration North Carolina saw steady job growth and expanded access to health services. He promised to use those same principles to fight inflation and protect families from what he called “unnecessary government overreach.”

Republican challenger pushes back

Republican Senate candidate Michael Whaley responded to Cooper’s message by pointing to recent increases in energy costs, health‑care premiums, and housing prices. Whaley warned that Cooper’s proposals could lead to higher taxes and more government spending, arguing that a market‑driven approach would better protect consumers.

“We’ve seen prices rise despite promises of relief,” Whaley said. “The solution isn’t more tariffs or more government control—it’s competition and innovation.” The exchange undersced the sharp policy divide shaping the race.

What voters need to know

North Carolina’s general election is set for Nov. 3, with early voting beginning Oct. 15. Both candidates will continue to tour key regions, and Charlotte is expected to remain a pivotal battleground given its diverse electorate and economic significance.

Local voters can find their early‑voting locations on the state Board of Elections website, and campaign events are being posted on each candidate’s social‑media channels. Community groups have urged residents to stay informed and consider how each platform will affect everyday costs, health‑care access, and the broader state economy.

Community response

Charlotte business owners expressed cautious optimism about Cooper’s focus on tariffs, noting that many small enterprises feel the pinch of imported‑goods price hikes. A local restaurant owner said, “If we can get those tariffs lowered, it could help us keep menu prices stable for families.”

Meanwhile, health‑care providers highlighted the importance of restoring affordable coverage, especially for seniors and low‑income families. A nurse at a Charlotte clinic remarked, “Access to health care is a lifeline for many of our patients; any effort to bring it back is welcome.”

As the campaign heats up, the Charlotte community will watch closely to see which candidate’s vision aligns best with the city’s priorities of affordable living, reliable health services, and economic growth.
