Rosario ‘Pete’ Vasquez Appointed as New U.S. Border Patrol Chief

The Trump administration has appointed Rosario ‘Pete’ Vasquez as the new chief of the U.S. Border Patrol, following the resignation of former Chief Mike Banks. Vasquez, a veteran with more than 26 years of service, will oversee nearly 20,000 agents and staff across the nation.

Leadership Transition

Vasquez’s appointment was announced by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on Monday. He most recently led the Border Patrol’s Blaine Sector in Washington state, managing operations along the U.S.-Canada border and collaborating with various federal, state, local, tribal, and international partners.

CBP Commissioner Rodney S. Scott praised Vasquez, describing him as ‘a Border Patrol agent’s agent’ who has demonstrated leadership and earned respect throughout his career. Scott emphasized Vasquez’s deep understanding of the mission, having experienced the challenges firsthand.

Vasquez’s Vision

Vasquez succeeds Mike Banks, who retired after leading the agency during President Donald Trump’s second administration. Banks expressed satisfaction with his tenure, noting a significant improvement in border security under his leadership.

As the new chief, Vasquez will be responsible for operations across nearly 7,000 miles of international land borders and approximately 2,000 miles of coastal waters. His extensive résumé includes roles in the Border Patrol’s Search, Trauma, and Rescue Unit, the Special Operations Group, and CBP’s Office of Anti-Terrorism, among others.

Focus on Security

Vasquez’s appointment comes at a time when Border Patrol officials are intensifying efforts to combat transnational criminal organizations, disrupt human smuggling and narcotics trafficking networks, and enhance border security operations. Vasquez expressed his commitment to supporting agents, strengthening operational capabilities, and maintaining the U.S. Border Patrol as the world’s most effective border security force.

Established in 1924, the U.S. Border Patrol is one of the largest federal law enforcement organizations in the nation, tasked with securing America’s land borders.
