The city of Rome is launching an initiative called “The Big Chill” to provide free movies in air-conditioned cinemas during the heat of the day. This comes as the city experiences an exceptionally hot summer, with temperatures hovering around 98 degrees Fahrenheit.

Details of the Initiative

Rome mayor Roberto Gualtieri announced the initiative, stating that it is designed to give people without air conditioning an opportunity to cool off and combat isolation through socializing, recreation, and cultural engagement. The films will include new releases and will be screened in participating cinemas.

The initiative is sponsored by the city’s culture department and Zetema Progetto Cultura. Popcorn will be available for an additional cost. The city has also opened up other air-conditioned venues such as libraries, performance theaters, and co-working spaces to the public from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. through August 4.
