Rocky Mount Rejects Utility Disconnection Moratorium

Rocky Mount city leaders have rejected another pause on disconnections for people behind on their power bills. The decision comes just a week after a local family of three was found dead in their home, with their lights cut off and a generator in use. Officials are investigating whether the generator played a role in their deaths.

Community Reaction

More than a dozen Rocky Mount residents expressed their grief and frustration over months of billing issues at a recent city council meeting. "Perhaps carbon dioxide was the culprit, but not without complicity," said Nehemiah Smith, a local pastor. Residents are calling for action to prevent similar tragedies.

Nearly 200 customers in Rocky Mount are currently without power, with temperatures expected to reach the mid-90s this week. Council member TJ Walker proposed an emergency utility assistance fund and a new moratorium on disconnections, but only the moratorium received a vote. It was rejected 6-2, with councilors citing a lack of specific information and potential financial impact on the city.

Mayor Sandy Roberson said the city manager is reviewing the city’s bill payment policies, and a special meeting may be held to discuss the issue further.
