Rocking Every Chair: Inside Swoon Furniture on Frankfort

My friend Diane told me about Swoon the way people talk about a doctor they actually trust: quietly, like she didn’t want it to get too crowded. That was three years ago. I’ve been back a dozen times since, mostly to browse, sometimes to buy, always to talk to whoever’s working the floor that day.

Swoon sits on Frankfort Avenue in the Crescent Hill stretch, right where the neighborhood starts feeling more residential and less bar-hopping. It’s a furniture and home goods shop, but that description undersells it considerably. The owners — Heather and Ryan — have been curating the place since 2007, and you can feel that tenure in the inventory. Nothing here looks like it was bought off a wholesale catalog. There are vintage Scandinavian sideboards next to new ceramics made by Kentucky potters. There are lamps that feel like they belong in a 1960s Italian film alongside hand-stitched linen throws made domestically in small runs.

Heather is the one I usually end up talking to. She has an easy way of explaining why something costs what it costs without making you feel like you’re being sold to. I once picked up a small walnut tray and asked about it out of genuine curiosity, and she told me the name of the woodworker, the county he lived in, how long he’d been making that particular piece. By the end of the conversation I’d bought the tray and felt good about it in a way that doesn’t happen often.

The shop itself is well-proportioned — not so large you feel lost, not so small you feel crowded. Natural light comes in from the front windows and the pieces are arranged so you can actually imagine them in a room, which sounds obvious but isn’t always the case. They rotate stock regularly enough that return visits have a reason. I’ve walked in on a Tuesday and found a dining table I’d never seen before, priced around $1,400, that stopped me in my tracks.

Price range runs wide. You can spend $18 on a beeswax candle or several thousand on a sofa. Most of what I’ve bought has been in the $40 to $200 range — small objects, a throw pillow, once a set of linen napkins I use more than any napkins I’ve ever owned. The quality holds up. That’s the thing. These aren’t objects that look good in the shop and disappoint you at home.

They also carry a thoughtful selection of books, mostly design and architecture, the kind you’d actually read rather than display. I picked up a Russel Wright monograph there once that I wouldn’t have found anywhere else locally.

Parking on Frankfort is street-only but rarely impossible. The shop is closed Mondays. I’d go on a weekday morning if you can manage it — quieter, more time to actually look at things, more likely to have a real conversation with whoever’s there. Weekend afternoons get busy, which is a good sign for them and a mild inconvenience for me.

I don’t go to Swoon when I need something. I go when I want to be reminded that objects can be made well, sold honestly, and chosen carefully. Diane was right to be a little protective of it. Some places earn that.
