Rocketdyne opens 3D‑printing facility in Daytona Beach to produce rocket parts

Daytona Beach welcomed a high‑tech manufacturing venture this week when Rocketdyne opened a dedicated additive‑manufacturing facility on the city’s industrial corridor. The plant uses 3D printing to produce intricate rocket engine parts that would be difficult or costly to make with traditional machining and welding.

Local impact and job creation

City leaders highlighted the project as a diversification of Daytona Beach’s economy, which has long been associated with automotive racing and tourism. The facility operates around the clock, with rows of printers building components layer by layer from digital designs. While the company has not released exact hiring numbers, officials said the plant will create skilled manufacturing jobs and provide training opportunities for local workers.

Technology advantages

Rocketdyne CEO Kristin Houston explained that additive manufacturing gives engineers greater design flexibility. “When you cut it open and you look at the inside, there are a lot of intricacies in those engine designs,” Houston said, pointing to injectors, small openings and winding tubes that are common in rocket engines. 3D printing allows those complex geometries to be produced more efficiently, reducing the need for multiple machining steps and extensive welding.

Houston added that the process can also lower costs and shorten lead times. “We move at the speed that they need, the scale that they need. We drive the cost down,” she said. “It gives us design flexibility to produce more complex products for them.” The company reported significant reductions in manufacturing time and rework, which translates into faster delivery for customers.

Support for national space missions

Rocketdyne’s new facility is already contributing parts to major U.S. space programs. Houston noted that the company has supported the space industry from the Apollo era through the Artemis program and continues to work on components tied to current missions. While the specific contracts were not disclosed, the involvement underscores the strategic importance of the Daytona Beach plant to the nation’s aerospace goals.

Community response

Local residents and business groups have welcomed the development as a sign of innovation in a city known for speed on the racetrack. The plant’s presence adds a high‑technology dimension to the local economy and aligns with broader efforts to attract advanced manufacturing to the region.

Rocketdyne plans to expand its capabilities as demand for space‑flight hardware grows, positioning Daytona Beach as a hub for cutting‑edge aerospace production.
