Riverfest returns to California Borough with Penguins, fireworks and community worship

California Borough is gearing up for Riverfest, the annual community celebration scheduled for Saturday, August 22, and Sunday, August 23. The weekend‑long event will take place along Wood Street and promises a blend of sports nostalgia, family‑friendly entertainment, and faith‑based fellowship.

Penguins stars headline Saturday

At 1 p.m. on Saturday, former Penguins forward Phil Bourque, who played for the team in the 1980s and 1990s, will join current forward Justin Brazeau for a meet‑and‑greet. The appearance follows a traditional firemen’s parade that will wind through the borough’s streets, honoring local first‑responders before the hockey legends arrive.

Fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins will have the chance to take photos, obtain autographs and hear stories from two generations of the franchise. The event underscores the close ties between the borough and the region’s beloved hockey team.

Live music, fireworks and family activities

After the parade and player appearance, Riverfest will continue with live music throughout the day. Local groups, including the Mon Valley Performing Arts Academy and the California Community Choir, are slated to perform on multiple stages. The musical lineup is designed to appeal to all ages, offering everything from upbeat pop to traditional choral pieces.

As evening falls, a fireworks display will light up the sky over Wood Street, providing a festive finale to Saturday’s programming. Vendors will line the street offering food, crafts and other merchandise, giving visitors a chance to sample regional flavors and support small businesses.

Sunday worship service and car show

Sunday’s schedule begins with a community worship service at 11 a.m., inviting residents to gather for prayer and reflection. The service will be followed by a classic car show that runs from noon until 4 p.m., showcasing a variety of restored automobiles and attracting enthusiasts from across the county.

Throughout the afternoon, live music will continue, with performances by the same local ensembles that entertained Saturday’s crowds. The combination of worship, automotive nostalgia and music reflects the borough’s commitment to honoring tradition while providing wholesome entertainment for families.

Practical information

Riverfest will be held along Wood Street in California Borough. Parking is available in nearby municipal lots, and local law enforcement will manage traffic flow to ensure a safe environment for pedestrians and drivers alike. For a complete schedule, vendor list and additional details, visitors are encouraged to visit the official Riverfest website at caboroughrecauth.com.

Community leaders have expressed optimism that Riverfest will boost local morale and provide a modest economic lift for area merchants. The event is organized by the California Borough Recreation Authority in partnership with local civic groups, underscoring the collaborative spirit that defines the borough’s approach to public celebrations.
