Martin County, Fla. – WPBF First Warning Meteorologist Brooke Silverang is highlighting the dangers of rip currents and offering advice on staying safe in the ocean during the summer. Rip currents are powerful, narrow channels of fast-moving water that can pull swimmers away from the shore.
Ocean Safety Tips
Silverang explained the importance of swimming at beaches with lifeguards and paying attention to warning flags and signs. If you find yourself caught in a rip current, don’t panic. Swim parallel to the shore to escape the current, and then swim back to land at an angle.
Silverang emphasized the need for beachgoers to stay informed about local weather and surf conditions and to prioritize safety while enjoying the ocean. It’s also important to pay attention to flags, as red flags indicate dangerous conditions and a red and purple combination means there’s sea life around.
