Riot Fest Adds Official Off‑Site Parking Lot to Ease Neighborhood Traffic

Riot Fest announced that for its 21st year it will provide an official off‑site parking lot for attendees. The lot, located at a Union Pacific facility near 14th Street and Western Avenue, is about six blocks – roughly a ten‑minute walk – from the festival grounds in Douglass Park.

Parking options and pricing

General parking costs $50 per vehicle per day, taxes and fees included. A premium option priced at $65 per day places drivers closer to the lot’s entrances and exits. The lot operates from 9 a.m. to midnight each day of the festival and does not allow in‑and‑out privileges or overnight parking.

Management and security

Riot Fest officials say the lot is professionally managed with security personnel, lighting, traffic control, staffed entry and exit points, and portable restrooms. An estimated 1,200 parking passes are expected to be sold for the weekend.

Impact on local residents

Long‑time Douglass Park neighbor Beatrice Starks, who has lived on Albany Avenue since 1989, noted that the new parking arrangement has reduced the congestion that traditionally clogs her street during the festival. While she still finds the event an inconvenience, she said the dedicated lot makes parking “better” for both residents and visitors.

Starks also mentioned that many locals sell snacks to festivalgoers from their front yards, turning the influx into a small economic opportunity. Riot Fest offers free tickets to residents within a half‑mile radius, though Starks said she was unaware of this benefit until recently.

Community response

Festival‑goer Steven Pickens and his partner Molly Wayner, who usually rely on public transit, tried driving for the first time this year. They appreciated the guaranteed spot, saying it gave them peace of mind.

In prior years, residents sometimes sold street parking spots, leading to disputes and even reports of vandalism. Chicago police began ticketing illegal spot sellers after last year’s festival, though some residents continued the practice without police intervention.

Riot Fest attendees can find more details on parking passes and alternative transit options on the festival’s website.
