Santa Maria, Calif. – On Wednesday afternoon, senior leaders from the Righetti High School and Pioneer Valley High School football programs gathered for a friendly luncheon at Cool Hand Luke’s Steakhouse and Saloon. The meeting, a long‑standing tradition dating back to the rivalry’s inception in 2006, gave the two teams a chance to chat, catch up, and reinforce the spirit of sportsmanship before the Battle for the Helmet showdown on Friday.

For more than an hour, players, coaches, and officials from the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District shared a meal and conversation. “It’s good to see them,” said Nehemiah Galindo, a senior linebacker for Righetti. “It’s a nice thing to just chat, meet up, see what’s going on and catch up. It’s always a nice time to communicate with them, so it’s going to be a good Friday.”
Pioneer Valley senior running back and linebacker Cade Quezada echoed the sentiment, noting the significance of the gathering for his final high‑school season. “It’s nice to just catch up and have some fun. It’s the last time I’ll ever play these guys, so to me it’s probably the biggest event I’ll have this year,” he said.
The Battle for the Helmet
The rivalry, known locally as the Battle for the Helmet, pits the Righetti Raiders against the Pioneer Valley Panthers. The winning team claims a perpetual helmet trophy that is split down the middle—one half painted black with the Panther logo, the other half purple with Righetti’s “W” logo. Each year a sticker bearing the season’s date is added to the victorious side.
Last season, Righetti retained the trophy with a dominant 49‑7 victory, marking its second straight win. Overall, the two schools have faced each other 19 times, with Righetti leading the series 13‑6.

Galindo added, “Growing up playing these guys over the past years, it’s a special moment. It’s fun to play against people you know, see who’s better, and then have the chats after the game or before the season. It’s always a nice time to refresh those memories.”
