Ride the High Rails: Why Durango’s Narrow Gauge Railroad Bike is One of Colorado’s Great Adventures

There is a moment, somewhere between the red-rock canyon walls and the glittering ribbon of the Animas River below, when you stop pedaling and just breathe. The air smells like pine resin and high-altitude sunshine, and the only sound is the wind moving through the scrub oak. That moment, for me, happened on the Durango Perins Peak State Wildlife Area trail system — a network of singletrack and doubletrack rides that local mountain bikers have quietly treasured for years, and one that every visitor to Durango absolutely owes themselves.

Perins Peak State Wildlife Area sits just west of downtown Durango, tucked behind the bluffs that frame the city’s western edge. You can reach the trailhead in under ten minutes from Main Avenue, making it one of the most accessible yet genuinely wild riding experiences in Southwest Colorado. The area is managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, which means the trails are well-maintained but refreshingly uncrowded — especially on weekday mornings when the light is still golden and the deer are still grazing in the meadows.

The trail network covers several thousand acres and spans a wide range of difficulty. New riders and families can enjoy the lower doubletrack loops that wind through open grassland with sweeping views of the La Plata Mountains to the west and the San Juans to the east. More experienced riders will want to push higher into the system, where the singletrack tightens through pinon-juniper forest and the grades get steep enough to remind your legs that you are, in fact, at elevation. The views from the upper reaches of the peak are the kind that make you reach for your phone, then decide a photo simply won’t do it justice.

One thing that sets Perins Peak apart from the more famous trail systems around Durango is the sense of genuine solitude. You are not sharing the trail with dozens of other riders on a Saturday afternoon. The wildlife area designation keeps motorized traffic out entirely, and the trails feel like they belong to whoever shows up with a good attitude and a water bottle. Elk, mule deer, and wild turkey sightings are common, particularly in the early morning hours.

If you need a bike, Durango has no shortage of excellent rental shops downtown that can set you up with a quality hardtail or full-suspension rig and give you a current trail conditions report. Most shops are happy to mark up a map and tell you exactly which lines are riding best that week. The locals here take their trails seriously, and they love sharing them with people who show up ready to have a real experience.

Bring plenty of water — the exposure at higher elevations is no joke, and the dry Colorado air will dehydrate you faster than you expect. Sunscreen is mandatory, a light wind layer is smart even in summer, and sturdy shoes make a real difference on the rockier upper sections. Start early if you can, both for the cooler temperatures and the wildlife activity, and plan to linger at the top long enough to actually take in what you are looking at.

Durango has earned its reputation as one of the great mountain bike towns in the American West, and the Durango Wheel Club community keeps that culture alive through group rides, trail stewardship days, and a welcoming attitude toward riders of every level. Perins Peak is the kind of place that reminds you why you fell in love with riding a bike in the first place — open country, honest climbing, and a descent that makes you laugh out loud. Come find out what that feels like.
