Richardson family leans on Christian faith and community grace after son Trent’s tragic death

Battle Ground, WA – The Richardson family of Battle Ground High School is turning a heartbreaking loss into a testimony of Christian faith and communal grace. Corey and Kelly Richardson say their son Trent died in a tragic accident, and they are urging the local community to support his friend James Gill, who was with Trent at the time of the incident.

Faith as the foundation for healing

Both parents emphasized that their understanding of the accident is that it was unintentional, describing Trent and James as “good friends” who “really liked each other.” Kelly Richardson explained that the family is careful about public statements while the investigation continues, but they remain confident that extending love and grace to James is the right response.

“Our faith has become the foundation on which we are trying to navigate the loss of our son,” Kelly said. “We want Trent’s death to become an opportunity to demonstrate the faith that has sustained us, rather than a reason for people to turn away from God.”

Community response and support

The Richardson family highlighted the outpouring of support from the Battle Ground community, including the school, local churches, first responders, and businesses. A vigil held at Battle Ground High School drew a packed stadium on short notice, providing a quiet, intimate space where families could honor Trent and pray together.

Clark Fire District 3, where the Richardson sons Chase and Brody serve, and Clark Towlettes Fire Rescue, where Trent was a cadet for two years, were cited as key sources of comfort. “We are seeing the body of Christ come together,” Corey said, noting that the fire departments’ presence exemplified the Christian community in action.

Local businesses also contributed: Inkability Copy Shop printed memorial materials, and Al and Ernie’s Bakery supplied baked goods for the vigil. Corey described the collaboration as “different businesses and church denominations coming together to comfort those hurting in the community.”

Message to young people

The tragedy has prompted many local youths to reflect on the brevity of life. Kelly said, “We’ve had so many young people coming up to us, stopped in their tracks, because they’re wanting to think about how they want to live their lives.” The Richardsons hope this reflection will lead to greater appreciation for family and faith.

Corey offered a direct appeal to the community’s young men: “Take life seriously. Don’t be flippant about life. Lay hold on eternal life. Seek that out. That’s the good life.”

Continuing hope and gratitude

Despite their grief, the family remains hopeful. Corey expressed a desire for James Gill to continue pursuing his love of baseball, saying the family will not “derail that in any way.” Both parents emphasized that hope does not mean denying grief; rather, they are discovering that the promises of Scripture provide tangible comfort during the hardest moments.

“God is good,” Corey concluded, urging believers to store God’s Word in their hearts so it can sustain them when life’s storms arrive.

Ways to honor Trent

The Richardsons invite community members to honor Trent by helping others, echoing his generous spirit. “Trent literally would give the shirt off his back,” Kelly said. “If you see someone in need, be ready to help in that moment.”

Through prayer, service, and shared grief, the Richardson family believes the Battle Ground community can turn tragedy into a lasting witness of Christian love and grace.
