Richard Neal and Dan Koh win Democratic nominations for Massachusetts congressional seats

Boston, MA — Voters in Massachusetts have chosen their Democratic candidates for two U.S. House races ahead of the November 2026 general election. In the 1st Congressional District, which covers the western part of the state, incumbent Representative Richard Neal won the party’s nomination, continuing his more than two‑decade tenure in Congress.

Neal, a veteran lawmaker and former chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, defeated a handful of challengers in a primary that saw modest turnout but solid support from labor unions and longtime constituents. He emphasized his record on infrastructure, job creation, and protecting the interests of working families across western Massachusetts.

Dan Koh wins 6th District Democratic nod

In the 6th Congressional District, which stretches from the Boston suburbs into the Merrimack Valley, former Massachusetts deputy secretary of transportation Dan Koh emerged as the Democratic nominee. Koh, who previously served in the Biden administration as a senior adviser on transportation, campaigned on improving regional transit, expanding broadband access, and supporting small businesses.

His primary opponents included several local activists and a former city councilor, but Koh’s experience in state and federal transportation policy gave him a decisive edge. He pledged to work closely with the state government to secure federal funding for road repairs and public‑transit projects that benefit families throughout the district.

Both races were decided without a runoff, as the Democratic Party’s primary rules in Massachusetts award the nomination to the candidate who receives the most votes, even if that total falls short of an outright majority. The primaries were held on September 1, and the results were certified by the state’s election officials on September 2.

These nominations set the stage for a competitive November ballot. In the 1st District, Neal will likely face a Republican challenger who has already begun campaigning on lower taxes and reduced regulation. In the 6th District, Koh’s opponent is a Republican businessman who is emphasizing deregulation and school‑choice policies.

Massachusetts voters will have the opportunity to weigh these choices in the upcoming general election, which will determine the balance of power in the House of Representatives. Local party organizations are mobilizing volunteers, and both campaigns have begun outreach efforts in community centers, churches, and small‑business venues across their respective districts.

Election officials remind voters to verify their polling locations and to consider early‑voting options, which remain available through the first week of October. Turnout in the primaries was lower than in presidential years, but both campaigns are urging constituents to participate, emphasizing that every vote matters in shaping the nation’s legislative agenda.
