A 25-year-old man from Narragansett, Rhode Island, is dead after a canoe tipped over while he was fishing Sunday afternoon in Charlestown. Police say first responders were called for a possible drowning just after 1:30 p.m. at School House Pond Beach, which is a swim-at-your-own risk freshwater facility located on Narragansett Indian Tribal lands.
Once on scene, officers learned that two men had overturned a fiberglass canoe while fishing about 100 yards off shore. One of them successfully swam back to shore, however, the other man, identified as Jordan S. Monroe, had gone under the water while trying to swim ashore and remained unaccounted for.
Charlestown police officers, assisted by US Fish and Wildlife Service and RI DEM Environmental Police officers, conducted a hasty water search and found Monroe a considerable distance offshore, police said. Life-saving measures were immediately started, and Monroe was taken to Westerly Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police added.
A preliminary investigation shows neither man was wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident, and there were not any life jackets present in the canoe, either. The Charlestown Police Department, RI DEM, and the state medical examiner’s office are jointly investigating this apparent drowning.
