Rhode Island GOP primary pits ex‑NFL cheerleader against former governor aide

In a closely watched Rhode Island Republican Senate primary, two very different candidates are vying for the party’s nomination. Former NFL cheerleader and publisher Elaine Pelino presents herself as the party‑line choice, while Aaron Guckian, a former aide to ex‑Governor Donald Carcieri, runs as a more centrist, policy‑focused alternative.

Candidate backgrounds

Pelino’s résumé spans modeling, media work and a stint cheering for the Houston Oilers, the franchise that later became the Tennessee Titans. In 2011 she founded Tigress magazine, publishing twelve issues before turning to politics. She says her outsider status gives her a fresh perspective: “I’m learning. Everything is a learning curve because I’m not a lifetime politician. I’m here because I love Rhode Island and want a prosperous, safe place for families.”

Guckian, by contrast, spent years in the state capital working for former Governor Carcieri. His campaign emphasizes a data‑driven approach to government, promising to overhaul permitting, improve service delivery and rein in state spending. He warned that Rhode Island’s budget has ballooned from $9.3 billion in 2019 to over $14 billion between 2024 and 2026 – a near‑50 percent increase – even as federal COVID relief funds are winding down.

Key issues

Both candidates have embraced traditional Republican priorities. Pelino pledges to champion merit‑based hiring, support law enforcement, enforce immigration law and expand school choice. She added, “We should get all the illegal immigrants out of here.” Guckian focuses on fiscal responsibility, arguing that the state made a “critical mistake” by building permanent commitments on temporary federal money.

The race reflects a broader GOP effort to find a candidate who can win a historically Democratic‑leaning state. In the 2022 election, Democratic incumbent Governor Daniel McKee defeated Republican challenger Ashley Kalus by a 57.9 % to 38.9 % margin.

What’s at stake

Whichever candidate secures the primary will face a steep uphill battle in the November 3 general election against the Democratic nominee. The contest underscores the party’s struggle to balance outsider appeal with seasoned policy experience as it seeks to reclaim a Senate seat in New England.

Local voters will have the chance to weigh the merits of a fresh face promising community‑focused reforms against a seasoned operative promising fiscal prudence and efficient government. The outcome will shape the Republican message heading into the general election and could signal the direction of the party’s future in the region.
