In a moving tribute over Memorial Day weekend, the remains of more than 40 Revolutionary War-era soldiers were finally laid to rest in Lake George, New York. This solemn event took place in the southeastern foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, where the soldiers’ journey to their final resting place concluded with full ceremonial honors.
Discovery and Historical Significance
The remains were unearthed unexpectedly in 2019 during construction work in Lake George. Among the artifacts found were pewter military buttons from the First Pennsylvania Battalion, dating back to 1775. These discoveries linked the site to the Revolutionary War, specifically the 1775–1776 Quebec Campaign, where the soldiers were part of a failed Continental Army effort to expand the colonies.
Lisa Anderson, curator of bioarchaeology at the New York State Museum, highlighted the youth of these soldiers, many in their teens and twenties, along with a woman and a child, emphasizing the hardships faced by families during wartime. The remains were transported from the New York State Museum in Albany to Lake George in a 60-mile procession, greeted by local residents waving American flags.

The reinterment at the new Repose of the Fallen memorial in Lake George Battlefield Park was a significant moment as the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of its fight for independence. Jennifer Saunders, the museum’s executive director, remarked on the profound meaning of this act of dignity, remembrance, and gratitude. The soldiers, who did not live to see the end of the American Revolution, were finally given a dignified burial, ensuring their stories are preserved as part of America’s rich history.
This event also sheds light on Lake George’s historical significance, previously overshadowed by its association with the French and Indian War.
