Resident Injured After Female Bear Enters Asheville Home

On Tuesday night at about 9 p.m., emergency crews responded to a wildlife encounter at a residence in Asheville, North Carolina. According to the Reems Creek and Asheville Fire Departments, a female black bear entered the home through an unlocked door, bringing three cubs with her.

Firefighters reported that the bear appeared to be searching for food. As the animal moved through the house, a resident attempted to flee the premises and was injured in the process. The exact nature of the injuries has not been released, and the person’s condition remains unknown.

Before first‑responders could reach the scene, the bear and her cubs exited the home on their own. The North Carolina Wildlife Commission, Buncombe County EMS, and local fire departments coordinated the response, ensuring the safety of the resident and securing the property.

Safety reminders from local officials

The Reems Creek Fire Department used its social‑media platform to remind residents of the importance of securing food sources and keeping doors and windows closed in areas where bears are active. “We remind residents in areas with active bear populations to use caution, secure potential food sources and other attractants, and keep doors and windows secured. Please do not approach or attempt to interact with a bear,” the department posted.

Officials emphasized that bears are generally shy and avoid human contact, but unsecured entry points can invite them into homes, especially during late summer when natural food may be scarce. They urged homeowners to install sturdy locks, use bear‑proof trash containers, and remove bird feeders or pet food that might attract wildlife.

What to do if a bear enters your home

If a bear does gain entry, authorities recommend staying calm, avoiding sudden movements, and slowly backing away to a safe exit. Do not attempt to confront or capture the animal. Call 911 immediately and provide clear details about the location and the bear’s behavior.

Local wildlife officials will typically assess the situation, determine whether the bear needs to be captured, and work with animal control to relocate the animal safely. In this incident, the bear chose to leave on its own, avoiding the need for a capture operation.

Community impact

The incident has sparked conversation among Asheville residents about wildlife coexistence and the responsibilities of homeowners in bear country. While the injury was unfortunate, the quick response by fire and EMS personnel prevented further harm.

As the region continues to see active bear populations, city officials plan to distribute educational materials and hold community meetings to discuss best practices for living alongside wildlife.
