Rescuers Save Chinese Worker and Nepali Woman Ten Days After Devastating Floods

Ten days after the August 26 floods that devastated large parts of Nepal, rescue crews have pulled two more survivors from the disaster zone. Officials said a Chinese national working on the Trishuli 3A hydropower project was rescued from a 225‑meter (about 738‑foot) tunnel, while a Nepali woman was saved from a house in flood‑hit Nuwakot town.

Rescue of the Chinese worker

The worker was recovered by a joint team of Nepalese military personnel and South Korean disaster experts. According to a social‑media post from the prime minister’s office, the man was airlifted by helicopter after being extracted from the tunnel, where an army medic monitored his condition during the flight. A photo released by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV shows two rescuers carrying the man out of the dark passage.

This marks the third worker rescued from the Trishuli hydropower project since the floods began. Two Nepali laborers were saved from a different tunnel at the same plant on Friday, bringing the total number of tunnel rescues to five.

Rescue of the Nepali woman

In Nuwakot, a town that suffered severe flooding, the Nepalese army announced that a woman was pulled alive from a house that had been inundated. She was wrapped in a gray blanket and airlifted to Kathmandu for medical evaluation.

Images released by the army show rescuers carrying the woman out of the water‑logged home, underscoring the ongoing effort to reach survivors trapped in remote or hard‑to‑access locations.

Wider impact of the disaster

The floods, likely triggered by a glacier collapse, have claimed at least 1,300 lives and left more than 5,000 people missing, according to Nepal’s disaster management agency. Roughly 900 workers are still unaccounted for across 12 hydropower projects, with about 500 believed to be trapped in various tunnels.

Authorities continue to deploy military units, international experts, and helicopter assets to locate and extract survivors. The rescue operations are hampered by ongoing after‑effects of the floodwaters, landslides, and damaged infrastructure that limit access to remote sites.

International cooperation

The involvement of South Korean disaster specialists highlights the collaborative nature of the response. Their expertise in tunnel rescue and flood mitigation has been instrumental in safely extracting workers from confined spaces.

While the recent rescues bring hope, officials caution that many more people remain missing and that the search will likely continue for weeks. Communities across Nepal are rallying to support families of the missing, and relief agencies are distributing food, shelter, and medical supplies to those displaced by the disaster.
