Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) defended the state of the U.S. economy on Sunday, arguing that Republican leaders have delivered on core campaign pledges while acknowledging that living expenses continue to strain household budgets.
Economic Growth and Challenges
Appearing on Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures,” Jordan pointed to legislative milestones under President Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress, particularly federal tax cuts, as evidence of positive economic momentum. “We said we would cut taxes; we did that,” Jordan told guest host Jackie DeAngelis. “The economy is moving in a pretty good direction, but I understand there are costs out there that are tough on middle-class and working-class families.”
Jordan also criticized the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), stating they were “hanging on this idea of affordability” to oppose ongoing military action in Iran. Looking ahead to the upcoming November elections, Jordan framed the choice for voters as “common sense versus the crazy on the Democrat left.”
Voter concern regarding everyday affordability has intensified during the six months since the onset of the war in Iran. The issue of the cost of living served as a central talking point for Democrats during the 2025 elections, which party strategists cited as a key factor in victories such as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s race.
Consumer finances have faced pressure from inflation across groceries and daily essentials, compounded by a sharp run-up in energy markets linked to disruptions in the Middle East. Repeated closures of the Strait of Hormuz—a maritime chokepoint responsible for approximately 20 percent of global petroleum transit—have periodically driven crude benchmarks past $100 per barrel.
