Reno fire district launches free curbside chipping for seniors and low‑income residents

As autumn arrives, Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue (TMFR) is rolling out a targeted curbside chipping program to help vulnerable homeowners create defensible space around their houses. The free service runs from October 10 through October 17 and is limited to seniors, low‑income and disabled residents who lack the means to transport green waste to regular drop‑off sites.

Program details and eligibility

Applicants must submit a request by the end of September. Once approved, TMFR will collect any woody vegetation—dead limbs, brush, or other standard fire‑hazard material—directly from the homeowner’s property. The department does not accept grass clippings or leaves, which should be placed in regular trash containers.

“We will take any sort of green waste, other than grass clippings. We don’t prefer to get that as it doesn’t chip very well, but any sort of woody vegetation, anything that’s just your standard dead limbs that have fallen or brush that was too close to the house,” said Brett Taylor, Wildland‑Urban Interface (WUI) Community Coordinator with TMFR. “The term hazardous fuels is pretty broad, so we will take a lot.”

Why the program matters

Creating at least five feet of cleared space around a home is a basic fire‑safety recommendation, and TMFR stresses that more clearance provides greater protection. By removing combustible material, homeowners reduce the risk that a wildfire will ignite structures on their property.

“We only reserve it for elderly, low‑income, or disabled individuals,” Taylor added. “Just the folks that don’t have the means to get their green waste to one of our drop‑off locations in the fall.”

How to apply

Residents can apply online through the TMFR website or by calling the department’s community services line. Approved participants will receive a scheduled pickup date during the program week. Those who do not qualify are encouraged to use their extra Waste Management stickers, take the material to the local dump, or inquire about area‑specific grants that may assist with disposal costs.

Community impact

The initiative reflects TMFR’s broader commitment to wildfire preparedness and aligns with state‑wide efforts to mitigate fire risk in high‑danger zones. By focusing resources on the most vulnerable households, the program not only enhances safety but also supports the community’s overall resilience.
