Remnants of Tropical Depression Edouard Bring Relief to North Texas Drought

North Texas residents saw a welcome change on Tuesday as the remnants of Tropical Depression Edouard moved inland, bringing much‑needed rain and a break from an extended heat spell. After 11 consecutive days of triple‑digit temperatures and a 48‑day drought at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, the system’s moisture helped lower temperatures and added measurable precipitation to the region.

Storm details and rainfall totals

Edouard made landfall early Tuesday afternoon with sustained winds of about 60 mph and gusts ranging from 70 mph to 90 mph. Traveling north‑northwest at a slow 5 mph, the system dumped more than a foot of rain along Highway 287 northeast of Houston. The National Hurricane Center issued its final advisory on Wednesday morning as Edouard weakened into a low‑pressure area.

Flood watches and local impacts

A flood watch remains in effect for Anderson, Freestone and Leon counties, where isolated totals exceeding four inches raise the risk of flash flooding through Thursday. Officials do not expect the watch to extend into the Dallas‑Fort Worth metroplex, as the heaviest rain is projected to stay south and east of the city.

Effect on the Ross Fire and local humidity

While the storm is not expected to deliver significant rain to aid firefighters battling the nearby Ross Fire, the increase in humidity and cloud cover should help slow the blaze’s progression. Fire crews continue to monitor conditions closely.

Temperature outlook

Dallas temperatures are forecast to reach 98 °F on Wednesday, with heat‑index values remaining in the triple‑digit range. By Thursday, highs are expected to dip to the mid‑90s, and rain chances across the metroplex are capped at roughly 30 % through Thursday morning. Further north and west, the chance of precipitation is even lower.

Looking ahead

Dry conditions and triple‑digit heat are expected to return by Labor Day weekend as a ridge of high pressure builds back over North Texas. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours, and remain alert for any updated flood warnings in the central counties.
